Friendship for Seniors during COVID-19

Reaching out to family, friends and neighbours is just as important for your health as protecting yourself from contracting coronavirus. Even though you may not be able to see your family and friends in person, it is really important that you stay in touch with them. Phone calls, video chats through programs like FaceTime and Skype, and emails are a great way to stay connected.

The Australian Government is providing additional funding to the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) – a free service that aims to provide friendship and companionship to older people receiving aged care services. To find out about this, speak to your facility or contact My Aged Care by phoning 1800 200 422 or logging on to www.myagedcare.gov.au

Seniors with Home Care Packages have flexibility with how they spend their funds over a wide range of care and services to support to stay safe, healthy and independent in their home. Ask your provider about any extra support you might need during this difficult time.

There are many helpful support services available for seniors, including:

The Older Persons COVID-19 Support Line which provides information and support for Older Australians, their carers, friends and supporters on 1800 171 866.

The National Coronavirus Help Line is on 1800 020 080. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you require translating or interpreting services, call 131 450.

COTA is available at www.cota.org.au/covid-19

National Seniors Australia can be contacted on 1300 765 050, and Dementia Australia on 1800 100 500.
