Did you know that Tasmania has one of the highest rates of fire fatalities per capita in Australia?
There are easy steps that we can take to remain safe, such as installing smoke alarms, developing a home fire escape plan, and using sound electrical and heating appliances. So if you haven’t already done so, it might be time to take those steps.
Thousands of Tasmanian residents have benefited from the Tasmanian Fire Service initiative Project Wake Up! aimed at improving fire safety in the homes of the elderly and people with disabilities. This free fire safety check will test your smoke alarm(s); replace smoke alarm batteries, if required; install smoke alarms in recommended locations in your home, if required; and conduct a visual fire safety check to identify any fire safety dangers in your home.
How does it work? Health Care Organisations such as your doctor or community nurse can submit your details to the Community Education Unit of the Tasmania Fire Service. Your name, address and contact details are entered on the program’s database. Then in the following month a Tassie firefighter will contact you to arrange a convenient time to visit and conduct the check.
If you know of someone in New Norfolk who could benefit from Project Wake Up! please let them know about the scheme.
